Ecologias da Água

Art residency & workshops dedicated to water ecosystems in Portugal

Ecologias da Água (Water Ecologies) is an art residency programme that studies water and wetland ecosystems in rural Portugal. By combining disciplines such as art, the humanities, natural sciences and computer science with vernacular knowledge and practices, we propose a dialogue between inhabitants and their natural environments for a sensitive approach to ecology.

Towards new narratives of the living world

The aim of this residency programme is to create new narratives about biodiversity that offer a broader vision of our relationship with nature. This vision is one in which humans no longer see themselves as separate from nature, in a position of superiority and exploitation, but as part of a whole, in a constant interaction with the other species, be they plants, animals, bacteria or many others. It is through art mediation and the transmission of creative practices that we hope to encourage a sensitive dialogue between humans and their natural environment.

Territorial dialogue

We invite artists to enter into conversation with scientists and local communities living in wetlands such as riverbanks and deltas, to develop their work in response to these unique ecological systems. This creative research culminates in public presentations and participatory creative activities for the local community, schools and cultural spaces, in the form of workshops, performances and art exhibitions.
