In Spring 2024, we were invited by Davide Bevilacqua from Art Meets Radical Openness (AMRO) to write about artist Sanela Jahic’s work : Under the Calculative Gaze

AMRO is a biennial for art, hacktivism and open cultures that provides a space for discussion and resistance against technological monoculture, and for sharing and learning together on contemporary issues of our networked times. This year’s theme, Dancing at the Crossroads, was dedicated to resistance against normative, extractive and anti-social technological mainstream and to the total rise of AI, through the exploration of computational degrowth and permacomputation.

Under the Calculative Gaze informs and warns us about our unwanted exposure to AI systems in various domains of activities, public and private, by featuring examples of algorithmic surveillance in the workplace. But it also gives us hope for societal resilience by telling us about strong human experiences that show we still have power to stand up against injustices. The installation was exhibited for AMRO at Maerz Gallery from 8 to 29 May 2024.

For this occasion, we interviewed Sanela Jahic about her work, conceived and edited 2 articles, one on the project itself and one on the artist, to then publish it on our blog. As usual, we are interested in highlighting the process of conception and making of the project, and the motivations and values of the human being behind it, that we shape into a narrative.

The “project” article will be published in Versorgerin, the Stadtwerkstatt’s publication (online and paper) on 7 June 2024.

We were also honoured with another invitation by the AMRO team to actively participate in the festival by moderating the morning sessions on Friday 10 May ; Lightning Talks featured presentations from artists Inari Wishiki, Valentina Vuksic and Patricia J. Reis, then Magic and Metaphors started with presentations from Yann Patrick Martins, Anna Kraher, Dasha Ilina, and Sarah Groff Hennigh-Palermo, followed by a Q&A.
